Biographical Information
Clara Belle Glick, later Clara Nicolai, was an early woman student at Purdue University, enrolling in classes the second year Purdue opened its doors to women students. Her father served as mayor of Lafayette for two terms in the late 19th century and her family was related to John Purdue and the McCutcheons.
Clara Glick was born in 1858 to Dr. Elias B. Glick and Henrietta Oyler (or Oiler). She enrolled in Drawing courses at Purdue from 1876-1877 in Selected Studies under the College of General Science and likely earned her diploma. Glick lived in Lafayette while attending Purdue. In October 1878, Clara Glick enrolled in an art and design school in Indianapolis. While in Indianapolis, Glick helped organized the Portfolio Club which brought together artists, writers, and musicians. She married Charles G. Nicolai, a wood engraver and artist, on September 20, 1882. She died in 1947.
