Scope and Contents
Materials include a letter from George Palmer Putnam to Erwin E. Schumann dated January 24, 1935 detailing Schumann riding with Putnam and Amelia Earhart to Rapid City, South Dakota. Also included is a handwritten route of Schumann's travels hitchhiking from Chicago to Los Angeles, a map of his route created by his daughter in 2025, and a newspaper clipping on Amelia Earhart.

Biographical Information
Erwin E. Schumann was born in 1915 and graduated from Lockport High School in Illinois in 1934. Schumann established an Indiana nursing association chapter and graduated from nursing school in 1938. In 1945, he began working at Inland Steel as an industrial nurse. Schumann died on November 29, 1975 in Indiana. Schumann's daughter, Michele Schumann-Prewitt, traced his 1934 route from Chicago to Los Angeles, included in the collection.
