Biography

John Howard Porsch was born in Fort Wayne. In 1922, he went to Purdue to join the ROTC and studied civil engineering. While at Purdue, Porsch was involved with the Purdue military band, playing saxophone and xylophone. He also participated in the Triangle fraternity, Tau Beta Pi, Contour, Scabbard and Blade, ASCE, and Harlequin.

After graduating, Porsch became an instructor in Engineering Drawing at Purdue, teaching descriptive geometry. In 1932, Porsch participated in a faculty exchange and went to work at Ohio State University for two years.

On June 11, 1934, Porsch married Bernice Howey. He was promoted from assistant to associate professor in 1939.

During World War II, Porsch was the field organization supervisor for the Office of Education’s Engineering Science and Management National Defense Training Program at Purdue. The program was dedicated to training military personnel for the war. Porsch was head of the Engineering Graphic Department from 1946 to 1970. He retired from Purdue in 1970 and passed away in 1987.
