Biographical Information

Virginia Martin was a speech pathologist and alumna of Purdue Univeristy where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech Correction (Speech Pathology and Voice Science, 1953). Martin attended Purdue at a time when there were few women students on campus and those who were, were overwhelmingly enrolled in the home economics program. Martin was one of few women in and early graduates of the fledgling speech correction program, now the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and was attracted to the program due to its focus on science and since it was an unconventional field for women. While at Purdue, Martin was involved in speech activities, student government, a member of a sorority, Gold Peppers, Mortar Board, and served on the women's debate team. She was also the student representative on a committee to address the educational needs of women at Purdue and was mentored by Dean Helen Schleman.

After graduating from Purdue, Martin attended the University of South Dakota where she earned a Master of Arts, majoring in Speech and minoring in Education (1956) and continued graduate work in speech pathology at the University of Colorado (1967-1969). Martin moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where she worked as a speech and hearing clinician, lecturer, and administrator. She served on numerous committees for speech and hearing associations in Manitoba and Canada and has published extensively, including a paper on the history of speech language pathology in Canada, titled, "The history of speech language pathology and audiology in Canada: Our first fifty years." Virginia Martin passed away on December 31, 2023.
